Celebrating Strength, Wisdom, and Vitality: Older Americans Month 2025

Older Americans Month

Honoring the Legacy and Impact of Older Adults

Older Americans Month (OAM) is a national observance held every May to recognize and celebrate the contributions, achievements, and experiences of older adults in the United States. It’s a time to honor the vital role they play in our families, communities, and society at large– whether through professional work, volunteerism, mentorship, or advocacy.

Each year, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) selects a theme to inspire reflection and action. For 2025, the theme is “Flip the Script on Aging.” This year’s focus is all about transforming the narrative around aging–encouraging people of all ages to challenge outdated stereotypes, embrace a more realistic view of aging, and recognize the strength and vitality that older adults bring to the table.

Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Older Americans Month

There are countless ways to engage with and uplift older adults during this month and throughout the year. Here are a few ways to participate:

Connect with Younger Generations:

  • Intergenerational activities: Organize opportunities for older adults to engage with youth through workshops, classroom visits, storytelling, or creative projects.
  • Storytelling: Facilitate opportunities for older adults to share stories and memories, either in person or through video chat. These conversations build understanding and mutual respect across generations.

Promote Social Engagement:

  • Social activities: Create opportunities for older adults to socialize through group activities, game nights, or day trips that bring older adults together to foster friendship and fun.
  • Community events: Promote local events and activities that encourage social interaction among older adults.

Celebrate and Recognize Contributions:

  • Advocacy: Use this month as a platform to raise awareness about important issues affecting older adults and encourage people to take meaningful action.
  • Recognizing accomplishments: Organize events where older adults can be recognized for their achievements and contributions to the community.

Foster a Positive Image of Aging:

  • Challenging stereotypes: Promote the “Flip the Script on Aging” theme by encouraging a positive and realistic view of aging.
  • Promoting active aging: Support programs and initiatives that help older adults remain engaged – physically, mentally, and socially.

Celebrating Older Americans Month isn’t just about what happens in May – it’s about cultivating respect, inclusion, and connection all year long.
