TRIO Programs
Educational Programs for Senior Nutrition Organizations and Older Adults
TRIO offers several programs to support senior nutrition organizations and the people they serve, to promote optimal well-being through proper nutrition for older adults. We do this through monthly e-newsletters, handouts, videos, and workshops that connect nutritious food to better senior health.

Nutrition Education
With the nutrition education initiatives of the OAA in mind and in support of healthy aging in place for older adults, TRIO’s nutrition education programs support the OAA’s three-pronged mission to reduce hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition of older adults; to promote socialization; and promote the health and well-being of older people.
Through these nutrition education programs, TRIO helps our partners create greater value for the seniors you serve and comply with OAA guidelines with:
- monthly e-newsletters to all partners, including nutrition education handouts to share with your communities (see examples below).
- health and wellness articles related to the aging population.
Our materials share valuable information about how making healthy food and lifestyle choices can have positive effects on brain health, heart health, and much more.

Culinary Events
At TRIO, we understand the strong connection of food to health—the foundation of our culinary events. These live workshops, held at senior centers and other congregate sites, are designed to increase social interaction and participation among older adults at your location.
In this teaching kitchen approach, TRIO’s Director of Culinary and Innovation, Chef Mario Reyes, prepares recipes for participants—often including some hands-on learning as they help put the meal together and then enjoy it together. The experience allows seniors to enjoy time with peers and learn tips to improve their health and wellness. This special culinary event also draws older adults to your senior site, thus boosting participation through nutrition education.
We’ve designed each workshop for older adults to connect a food’s ability to prevent a specific health issue relevant to them and their lifestyle. Focus topics include brain health, heart health, muscle building, boosting the immune system.
Chef Mario also conducts these culinary events at conferences around the U.S., with meals that relate to the session topic; he is also available to conduct a nutrition workshop for clients.

Ask a Dietitian
Ask a Dietitian promotes health and well-being by connecting older adults with a TRIO registered dietitian nutritionist. This nutrition education program helps them make educated food choices that meet their nutrition and wellness goals and answers common questions related to older adults’ special diet needs. Seniors can also submit specific nutrition questions to our registered dietitians.
We will set up this program according to your parameters regarding how you want your seniors to interact with our team of experts. Your team can access and share online segments on health-related topics as well.

This video series enables older adults, their caregivers, and meal program teams to learn about various aspects of proper senior nutrition. Global Bites segments are cooking classes by Chef Mario Reyes, TRIO’s Director of Culinary and Innovation, that showcase various globally inspired menu items, seasonal favorites, and more. Through Nutritional Insights, our registered dietitians discuss monthly nutrition education topics with information that promotes healthful senior nutrition through better meal planning and diet for older adults.
