Serving Grandparents with Heart and Purpose

Every day, TRIO Community Meals has the privilege of serving grandparents—individuals who have spent a lifetime caring for others. Producing more than 125 million meals annually, TRIO approaches this responsibility with purpose and deep respect.

The TRIO team brings together registered dietitians and chefs who collaborate to ensure each meal is both nutritionally balanced and rooted in familiar, comforting flavors. It’s a thoughtful blend of care and expertise, our way of treating  older adults like family.

Evolving Tastes of a Younger Generation of Older Adults

Today’s older adults are embracing diverse culinary experiences—exploring new cuisines, enjoying global flavors, and seeking meals that are both satisfying and exciting. This growing appetite for bold, dynamic flavors is reflected in TRIO’s approach to menu design.

The TRIO culinary team thoughtfully crafts meals that deliver vibrant taste while meeting the nutritional needs of aging adults, because a great meal should nourish both body and spirit.

Global Inspiration from Chef Mario Reyes

TRIO’s Director of Culinary and Innovation, Mario Reyes, is a master of global flavors. His creative process starts with a protein, then explores ways to enhance it using international seasonings. Instead of relying on familiar gravies, Chef Reyes builds flavor from the ground up with spice blends and global cooking techniques.

Take a classic like chicken and rice. “Everyone loves chicken and rice,” says Chef Reyes, “but when you infuse it with different flavor backgrounds, it becomes paella. It is still that familiar dish, just elevated with a global twist. Innovation is key.” His approach transforms comforting meals into dining experiences that are both familiar and new.

Honoring Cultural and Regional Tastes

Across the country, flavor preferences vary widely, shaped by community demographics and cultural heritage. While Mediterranean, Latin, and Asian flavors are often favored, every region has its own story to tell through food.

TRIO understands the importance of honoring these regional and cultural identities.

“It’s good to honor their own culture while at the same time adding local flavors,” explains Chef Mario Reyes. As people age, food memories become even more meaningful—and TRIO works to ensure those cherished tastes are preserved and celebrated in every meal.

Cooking with Purpose and Passion

Every meal is prepared with heart. Chef Reyes takes personal pride in making sure every dish resonates with the people who eat it.

“I want them to feel a taste of home,” he says, highlighting the emotional connection between food and identity. It’s this passion that fuels the team’s commitment to delivering comfort and joy to each dish.

Food as a Connection to Connection to Community and Identity

Meals are more than nourishment—they’re the heart of every celebration. They bring people together and help them stay connected to their heritage.

“Regional menus keep our older adults connected to their communities and background,” says Chef Reyes. By serving food with a sense of familiarity, TRIO helps older adults stay grounded in who they are.
